From RV tiny living to small living in the city.
Welcome to our new little home!
After years of travel and over 60,000 miles around the U.S. we finally parted ways with our dearest home on wheels. Selling a favorite car is one thing, but try saying goodbye forever to your favorite car and your HOME (that you built yourself and put SO much love into) at the same time. It was devastating to say the least. I couldn’t even be there when the deal went down and sent Cees to do it alone. Luckily, Vie went to the best new owner and they’re having great adventures together. It’s fun to see Vie out there taking people to cool places again. Weird, but fun to see. We know that road life isn’t totally over for us and are trying to embrace this new season of stability for a time.
Cees’ work in software development has brought us to move semi-permanently to Utah to be closer to his business partner and experience the newfound freedom and joy of reliable, fast wifi. There are definitely perks to living the sticks and bricks house life! We plan to be in Utah for about a year while Cees and his partner get their business off the ground. Luckily, coming back to Utah feels like home for us since we went to university in a town about an hour south of Salt Lake City a few years ago. We also have lots of family and friends who still live here, so thankfully the transition for us has been as easy as we could have hoped for.
Anyways, now that you have the backstory, let’s get to the fun stuff… our small space transition!
We only bring things into our home that we love and we try to source things responsibly, buying secondhand when possible, using what we already had in storage, buying local, supporting artists and small businesses.
Living room:
Couches: Zinus Sunny Modern Sofa & Zinus Juan Mid-Century Loveseat –Afforable, durable couches that came in a box that I assembled myself.
Coffee Table: Southern Sun Shop — This shop is GREAT and makes beautiful handcrafted, customizable pieces for your home.
Hexagon Shelves: Northern Creek Wood — LOVE our customized shelves from this shop. They hang flush to the wall and were very easy to install.
Pillows: Woven Nook — The hardest part was holding myself back from getting ALL the pillows. Look no further for modern, affordable home decor.
Modern Plant Stand: Big Fish Interiors — Minimalist, modern, beautifully hand-crafted plant stands and more!
Plants are from Home Depot with miscellaneous pots gathered from all over.
Rug: Target — I love a good shag area rug!
Pouf: Target — These are sturdy are add a fun texture to the room.
Bookshelf: JT Industrial Designs — Incredibly sturdy, modern shelves handcrafted by a wonderful small business that we love to support! These shelves are beautiful and are now the home to our beloved books and plant babies.
Bedroom:
Mattress: Avocado Vegan Mattress — Vegan, organic, Greenguard Gold, non-toxic certified, no flame retardants, tufted not glued, no polyester covers… sooo many reasons to love this mattress. It was one of the best choices we’ve made!
Bed Frame: TY Fine Furniture — Absolutely the most gorgeous solid wood bed of uncompromising quality, carefully and beautifully handcrafted by the TY Fine Furniture team. This is one of our favorite pieces of furniture ever. We hope to cherish this bed forever.
Bedding: Buffy Eucalyptus Sheets & Breeze Comforter — It’s like sleeping in a comfy cloud, what else can I say?
Pillows: Woven Nook — Our favorite shop for modern, affordable pillows.
Hexagon Shelf: Northern Creek Wood — LOVE our customized shelves from this shop. They make every space feel instantly cozier and modern.
Photographs: Mixtiles — We are in love with Mixtiles photos and how easy they are to order and hang. Framing photos really intimidates me, but Mixtiles makes the whole process so simple. Download the app, choose photos from your phone, select frame style, order, and wait for them to be delivered to your door in about 5 days! To hang them you simply peel off the sticker on the back to reveal a wall-friendly adhesive, stick to the wall and re-stick as many times as you need to! It doesn’t hurt the wall whatsoever. These photos make our room so happy and special.
Dresser: Thrifted and re-stained by us. Some people think that small spaces require extra small pieces of furniture, but we have learned that a few larger pieces actually make a room seem bigger, more simplified, less cluttered. Plus, this dresser is our main storage option, so it had to be a massive!
Kitchen:
We actually kept our wedding gifts from 2014 (most of which were kitchen things), even while we were traveling. I’m so glad that we were able to unearth everything from storage and I am finally able to use my fun kitchen gadgets again! I wish I could link everything for you, but most of our kitchen items have been gifted or thrifted, so it’s hard to say the origin of everything. Many of our things are from Crate & Barrel, Anthropologie or from our travels. I will link 4 of my all-time favorite kitchen items.
Spices: Gneiss Spice — Organizational spicy bliss. Personalize the pantry with 200+ organic spices in the cutest magnetic glass jars. These spices are my FAVORITE part of our kitchen and the overall cooking experience. Flavor makes or breaks a meal and these gorgeous, organic spices take my meals to the next level. Our home is plant-based and while some people may think that without meat, dairy, or eggs our cooking would be boring, but I have found the opposite to be true! Cooking with plants and spices from our generous earth brings me joy and fills my soul and body with energy. I feel connected to and inspired by the earth when I cook with her gifts.
Blender: Vitamix — I am a minimalist in the kitchen and use this EVERYDAY multiple times per day.
Stand Mixer: Kitchen Aid — For the times when I feel extra, like making coconut cream whipped cream or homemade bread!
Popcorn Maker: Whirley Pop — Okay, don’t laugh, but in our house we take popcorn very seriously and this on-the-stove popper is the BEST. We thrifted ours and love making homemade 3-minute popcorn without added preservatives, oils and junk.
Bathroom:
Apologies for this massive photo of our toilet, but I must say, this is the only exciting part of our bathroom.
Bidet: Tushy Classic — We think this is a MUST. We’ve traveled a lot and noticed that many countries are no stranger to the fabulous bidet. Why hasn’t American caught on yet?! This little attachment makes the bathroom experience SO much better. But, don’t take our word for it, try it yourself.
Stool: Amazon — This still helps our toddler hop onto the toilet more easily and helps nature flow for everyone a little better.
Kitty Litter Box: Amazon — Our place is TINY, but Kitty deserves a palace to do his business. We love this design because it keep all the kitty litter inside, no nasty little grainy pieces spreading throughout the house. Ew! The only thing worse than stepping on a bunch of litter is a Lego piece.
