Day 3: Meals on Wheels and Babies in Black Sand

We knew that food would be one of the bigger expenses of the trip – we had been warned that hotdogs could cost like 20 bucks! (actually, they were closer to 5 – at least the one I got at the gas station and it was AWESOME)  Anyways, we decided, that since we were going to be on the move, and in our vans most of the time anyways, that we would pack a bunch of dehydrated meals from Good To Go Foods.  And we were super stoked that we did. For me, the main success of that choice came from how we had to do minimal dishes – conserving water on the road is always important, so not having to wash pots and pans was a huge win.

For us, having the van was really awesome. We could drive wherever we needed to go, pull over and have our meal, and then hit the road to get to the next place.  It made things more mellow in a way, where we didn’t have to have a strict schedule of check in and check out anywhere. But, it isn’t for everyone.  Sometimes having your own space and place to shower outweigh the mobile benefits. For us, it was a short trip, and the Camp Easy was perfect for us.

Family photo at Seljalandsfoss! Check off another epic water fall in Iceland.  I guess in the summer you can actually go behind the falls?  Pretty cool.  Since there was a huge risk of falling ice (we saw some huge chunks come down while we were there), they rope off a pretty wide berth.

We drove a bit further down the road to the Black Sand Beach – I was determined to see some cool basalt pillars that day!

We got to the beach and let the babies crawl around in the black sand.  Then, of course, we took the classic person on a pillar photo.  Look how cute!

Nature makes the best art.  We really can’t compete.  Humans make some pretty awesome things, but nothing that moves me like these rocks can.

Shoutout to the coolest wife and kid combo in the world.  How lucky am I that I get these two permanently?  So grateful for them and the joy they bring into my life.

We rode the sunset out that day there at the beach.  We went back to the parking lot, boiled some water, and made some more yummy food.
