Day 6: A Canyon and an Arch

We woke up early and got to Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon.  We wanted to get there before anyone else showed up, because we heard that it could be a pretty crowded place.  Well, turns out, it wasn’t crowded at all.  We had the whole place to ourselves!

Apparently the locals have been having problems with tourist pooping wherever they want!  I guess the influx of people traveling in vans (just like us) who don’t have on-board toilets, panic, and end up just dropping trow wherever they are.  TERRIBLE.  It’s things like this that give tourists, and specifically road-life tourists a bad name.  It’s really sad how a handful of people can ruin something for the majority.  Pro tip – don’t poop anywhere other than a toilet, okay?

Fjaðrárgljúfur was really one of the best stops of the whole trip for us.  We loved exploring and walking through the hills, and peaking down into the canyon.  The was sleeping most of the time, too boring for him, I guess.  Check out the video of him literally snoring while we are out there.

It really was just stunning.

It is times like these that I am so grateful for the life we live.  We realize that we are beyond lucky to be able to spend our days exploring hidden gems like this.  And what is crazy is, we get to do it all over the world.  I hope that we are always able to spend time in the wild together with Theo – even if he is snoring most of the time!

Again, Zippo handwarmers came in clutch.  We used them all morning as we took photos of the canyon and the river.  And actually, my phone was dying in the canyon (my older phone can’t hack when it gets cold) and I just plugged it right in to the hand warmer (they double as a device charger) and it held the charge no problem! It is amazing how much of a difference these things made for us out here!

After being stormed in, we welcomed the bit of sun that we got and whipped out the table for an impromptu picnic!  And seriously, Good to Go foods are the best thing to ever happen.  It just makes having great food in the wild SO EASY.

We spent the first half of the evening watching the sunset, and enjoying being in the wild.  This was one of our warmest days – we really tried to soak in as much sun as we could!

With the last bit of sun disappearing, we hurry and drove up to the Dyrhólaey – the arch overlook.

This is where we were the day we were almost blown off the southern tip of Iceland a few days back – this time it wasn’t completely fogged in and we were able to partake in the glorious view!
